Managing Director

With over three decades of experience in the turnaround and insolvency industry, Tom Kim has worked with companies facing their most critical moments. Since 1988, he has guided distressed businesses as a bankruptcy attorney, business analyst, and turnaround practitioner.

Before founding r² advisors, Tom served as an originator and asset manager at Republic Financial Corporation, a Denver-based private investment firm. There, he specialized in recovering troubled loans and valuing distressed companies from an investor’s perspective. Earlier in his career, Tom practiced bankruptcy and corporate law at the international firm LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae, LLP.

Tom is known for his direct, empathetic approach, guiding CEOs through difficult decisions while building trust and accountability. His most valuable asset is active listening, ensuring every client receives his full attention so he can understand the business’s current state, goals, and underlying challenges. He then tailors solutions that align with their values, culture, and long-term vision to set their business up for success.

Credentials and Community Involvement

Tom holds a B.S. in Economics from the University of Utah and both a J.D. and MBA from Santa Clara University, and is a Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP). He has held numerous leadership positions within the Turnaround Management Association (TMA), including Global Chairman, President, and VP of Finance. His involvement also includes serving on TMA’s Executive Committee and leading its Chapter Resource and Response Council.

In 2017, Tom joined Colorado Concern, reflecting his dedication to building a business-friendly environment in Colorado. He currently serves on the boards of Denver Health, Adams State University, and the Colorado State Fair, continuing to contribute to the economic and civic well-being of his community.

Outside the office, Tom enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters, exploring all that Colorado has to offer, including its mountains, plains, and local trails, preferably on horseback. Tom is a member of the Roundup Riders of the Rockies, an organization “dedicated to the perpetuation of the Western Tradition.” He is passionate about bridging the gap between the urban and rural divide. Tom is inspired by bringing people together and fostering an appreciation and respect for differing experiences.
